Roland Garel Obituary

Roland George Garel, a man of unwavering faith, immense warmth, humor, and musical talent, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2024, at Lakeridge Health Hospital in Oshawa, ON, Canada, at the age of 84. Born on September 28, 1939, in Kingston, Jamaica, Roland's life was a testament to his dedication to living in accordance with his spiritual beliefs, a life filled with love, laughter, and boundless energy.

He is survived by his cherished children, Saskia, Matthew Garel, and daughter-in-law Joanna and grandchildren Tristan Chen, Micaiah Chen, Bronson Garel, Trenton Garel, Jordan Andino, Erin Andino, and great granddaughter Malou Andino.

Roland approached life with a jovial spirit, always ready with a joke to lift the mood. His musical prowess was legendary, particularly his mastery of the guitar, specializing in Spanish classical pieces, but always ready to strum old time Jamaican folk songs. He also delighted audiences with his piano skills and mesmerizing singing voice.

Fluent in multiple languages including Italian, French, Spanish, German, and Latin, Roland's intellect and linguistic abilities were remarkable. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for fitness, stemming from his days on the university swim team and his regular work outs at Gold’s Gym. Roland was a fitness enthusiast, relishing in nature hikes at his signature brisk pace.

Despite battling Alzheimer’s since 2015, Roland remained resilient, surrounded by the compassionate staff at Extendicare Oshawa from June 2018 onwards. His spirit, laughter, and zest for life will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In honoring Roland's memory, let us cherish the joy he brought into our lives and continue to celebrate his legacy of laughter, music, and love for the great outdoors. Rest in peace, Roland George Garel.
